The “highest self” or “highest soul” is referred to as adhyatma in Sanskrit. Its root words are atma, which means “self,” and adhi, which means “above,” though it is also sometimes referred to as “around it” or “beside it.”
According to yogic philosophy, adhyatma refers to the highest, most transcendent, most personally significant element of the self. However, it can also describe someone who speaks highly of themselves or is “self-centered.”
The “overself,” which is defined as the manner in which Brahman appears in the soul of all beings, is referred to as the adhyatma in the Bhagavad Gita. In this way, the universe is a spiritual manifestation of Brahman, and as a result, Adhyatma is both the highest self and the whole universe.
According to certain spiritual teachings, the key to spiritual progress is to practise focusing less on the individual and more on the Cosmic Self because adhyatma can concurrently refer to both the cosmic Highest Self and the individual self.
